School Life

Einstein said “It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer“. In Scoil Naomh Iosef we believe that education and learning comes in many guises. We encourage every child to develop their own creativity in a safe and happy environment where learning by doing, experimenting and sharing is the norm. “Foghlaim Agus Fás” are the words underlying our school crest – Learn and Grow. This is our aspiration for every child in our school.

Sport

Physical Education is an integral part of Scoil Naomh Iosef. We believe in participation for enjoyment rather than competition. Every child participates in sports such as – hurling/football/basketball/athletics. We also have a swimming programme for every child.

  • Scoil Naomh Iosef is delighted to have access to Ballyheigue Community Centre for sports such as Badminton and Basketball.
  • Scoil Naomh Iosef has also coached our students in Community Games to win Gold/Silver in All Ireland Draughts.

Drama

Drama is part of everyday learning in Scoil Naomh Iosef. Our teaching staff have a wide experience of the stage outside of school and bring these skills to their teaching. The students utilise drama in every subject and not as an isolated entity. The success of their filmmaking bears testament to the students’ creativity.

An annual school concert is held at Christmas time.

Art

“ Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up “. This is a quote from Picasso. In Scoil Naomh Iosef it is an absolute joy to see every child bring their own creativity and style to all our art projects. As you enter our school a beautiful mural created by Lisa Harkin ( a former student ) welcomes you.  To paraphrase Harry Chapin  -There are so many colours in the rainbow …and we use every one

Vegetable Garden

Do your children know where their food originally comes from? A vegetable garden is an excellent teaching resource and provides great enjoyment and satisfaction to all involved.

Why grow vegetables?

  • Food growing can teach children about soil, nutrition, science, and life cycles of the vegetables and the creatures attracted to the garden.
  • A vegetable plot can raise children’s awareness of the seasonal nature and the variety of food.
  • Our food growing project is part of our school’s development plan with staff, pupils, parents and even local residents being involved.
