A Very Brief History of Schooling in Bouleenshere.

The plaque on the entrance to our present building bears the date 1963 but the history of schooling in Bouleenshere goes back much further than this.

St Josephs National School Bouleenshere Ballyheigue
1836, The first National School

The first National School to be built in Bouleenshere was located on the site of the old chapel located north of the present St. Mary’s Church and it opened on 26th July 1836. There were 281 boys and 175 girls in a two-storey building which was so small that many must have been taught outside,

1886, Moved

The second national school to be built was completed in 1886 at Bouleenshere Cross.

1963, Present School - Stage 1

In 1963 a two-class roomed building was completed on the present site and the boys from the Bouleenshere Cross school moved in.

1968, Present School - Completed

In 1968 the extension had been completed and girls finally transferred from the Bouleenshere Cross school.

To give a proper history and background to Education in Bouleenshere one has to look no further than the wonderful book ‘Bouleenshere- Down Through The Years’ which was coordinated by a former Deputy Principal and teacher in our school, Micheál Ó hAllmhuráin for the school’s Golden Jubliee in 2013. This is a wonderful book full of interesting facts and it gives a comprehensive history of Bouleenshere National School from a local and national context. The pages of this book are full of pictures of former students, staff and people of interest who have magnificent stories to tell about their times in Bouleenshere School.

At present we have some copies of this book available from the school office.
